From 1756 to 1763, France participated in the Seven Year's War but did not succeed. Becuase of this, France lost alot. To add to that, earlier on in 1713, France had to cede to the Brits: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Islands, and a part of Maine. The French citizens at that time were given the option to stay as subjects of the British crown or leave. Those who left were called Acadians.
